COASTAL APARTMENT AS MINIMAL RETREAT

Bondi Apartment

Location

Bondi, Sydney

Type

Residential

Traditional Custodians

Bidjigal, Birrabirragal and Gadigal

Located on the top level of a 1940’s brick apartment building high on the ridgeline of South Bondi, this 78sq.m north facing apartment building was conceived as a retreat from urban life – creating a simple minimal interior that reworked the windows to act as frames to the beach and suburb beyond. Within the interior the walls are a simple white to capture the hues of the coast as they reflect back into the apartment, with moments of colour reminiscent of the ocean edge introduced by the bathroom stone.

The re-organisation of the plan to create a sense of space within a small apartment footprint was the key concept for the project. The kitchen was reimagined as a floating storage wall on the common boundary of the apartment, freeing up space to create an open plan living and dining space looking out to Bondi. The hallway was dimensioned to create a generosity of space and open connection between living and bedroom spaces, further breaking down the sense of rooms characteristic of the original 1940’s plan.
